Narrative Shorts 2

This year’s Narrative Shorts program at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase highlights the breadth and depth of local storytelling, offering a dynamic mix of genres, voices, and perspectives. From coming-of-age dramas and dark comedies to experimental pieces and heartfelt character studies, each film brings something distinct to the screen. Whether rooted in specific St. Louis neighborhoods or pushing boundaries with bold cinematic style, these short narratives reflect the diversity of both the region’s filmmakers and the stories they’re driven to tell.

A Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening.

It Happened In August

Directed by Artima Sakulkoo

A quiet immigrant drama about love, grief, and rediscovering art after loss.

It Happened In August is a romantic drama that follows Aim, a Thai immigrant, and her younger brother as they return to New York City after the loss of their mother and the collapse of Aim’s artistic dreams.

One evening in late August, while working at a Thai restaurant, Aim is stunned when her ex-girlfriend Sandra, now an acting coach, walks in unannounced. Their unexpected reunion stirs buried emotions and draws Aim into a quiet reckoning with grief, love, and the creative fire she thought she had lost.

As old feelings resurface, Aim finds herself torn between her family responsibilities and the pull of rediscovering her true self. Through a quiet act of courage, she begins to step forward, opening herself once again to love and art.

Aim walks into Sandra’s workshop. Their eyes meet across the room, and in that silent moment, both know this could be the beginning of something new.

Divine Intervention

Directed by John Limoges

Late one night, a man and a woman are each sitting alone at a bar. Evelyn notices Joe and gives off signs of interest. Joe is mutually interested but chickens out from taking any action and Evelyn leaves. There’s nothing new about this scene. It has happened thousands of times and will happen thousands more.

But what if we could see the potential opportunities we cut off from ourselves when we chicken out of taking action? What if there was the possibility of a do-over? On this night, for Joe Montgomery, there is. An angel visits Joe and informs him how Evelyn would be a great match for him. Evelyn returns; and with an angel that only he can see as his wingman, Joe gets a second chance at a beautiful opportunity.
